because it has little parts of every Pokemon game in it. you start in johto, just like in gold silver and crystal and later travel to kanto (firered and leafgreen). i never knew than johto and kanto shared a Pokemon league! you can also catch latios or latias after meeting the guy in the purple tuxedo:steven, just like in hoenn. there is also a battle frontier, previously only available in emerald. you also have the rare oppertunity to catch kyogre, groudon, and rayquaza after you beat your character from red and green: red. on the radio in your pokegear, you'll often hear them mention rare Pokemon from sinnoh. so the reason i think Pokemon heartgold and soulsilver are so popular is because it reminds us of all the great times we had in the other regions.
