It depends on when in the game you are talking about, During the Wheel of Fortune portion of the game where the contestant has to spin the wheel they choose a single letter if the wheel lands on a prize, money, free spin, or wild card. If that letter is in the puzzle they also win another turn and can solve the puzzle or spin the wheel again to see if the win a chance to choose another letter. At any time during this portion of the game when it is their turn and if a contestant has 250 dollars in cash they can choose to spend the money and buy a vowel instead of solving the puzzle or spinning the wheel. If the contestant picks a vowel in the puzzle they win another turn. The number of letters a play can choose in this part of the game depends on how successful they are at choosing letters in the puzzle, buying vowels, spinning, and solving the puzzle. The game only limits the length of there turn by their fortune or luck. After the final bell rings a contestant can only solve the puzzle or choose a single letter or vowel and only wins a chance to solve the puzzle if they were successful in choosing the letter or vowel. During the bonus round of the show a contestant gets to choose 3 additional letters (4 if the have a wild card) and an another vowel after Vanna White uncovers the vowel E and the letters T R N S & L. They then have ten seconds to solve the puzzle and win the bonus after their chosen letters are uncovered.
