My Great Great Uncle Rudolph Lapps invented the game. He was an engineer in Michigan and would travel home to Pennsylvania to see his sister and her two daughters Janice and Betty. When he would come visit he kept the girls busy by making up this game for them to play. It was until he shared this idea with a friend in hopes of marketing it that he ran with the idea to Milton Bradley Games. My uncle never received any money or contributions for his invention but we still have the original game in our family to this day! It was in the early 1900's.

Battleship still exists in its classic form and is easy to acquire a set at many toy outlets. There are talking versions of the game available but the official one built by Hasbro is no longer manufactured and is a collectable item. Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission is a modern and high-tech version of the game but it is considerably more expensive. I would warn against the Battleship released for the major games consoles as it is not the traditional game but a tie in to the film of the same name. There are however digital versions available for iOS and Android phones and tablets that are similar derivatives of the traditional battleship.
Ruben Klamer invented the first game of life in 1960.

Battleships have been in use since the 1500's, but the British Admiral Jackie Fisher was responsible for HMS Dreadnought, launched in 1905 and considered to be the first modern battleship. If the question refers to the game Battleship, it was invented by Clifford von Wickler in the early 1900's, and first marketed by the toy company Milton Bradley in 1943.

While the electronic version of the game Battleship brings the game to life with sounds and lights, the original classic version of Battleship is just as much fun to play without all the bells and whistles. It would be ultimately up to the child's personality as to what version would suit their tastes better.
The cost of an electronic Battleship game differs on the seller on Amazon. For example, one seller sells the game for $25.99 and another seller sells the game for $165.99.
