You can get a Bastiodon from an evolved Shieldon, which you get from cloning at Oreburgh Museum after excavating a Shield fossil underground.
OptionalDon't start with a Turtwig, since Ponyta is the only other Fire-type Pokemon you can catch in Pearl before beating the Elite Four, sadly. If you start with a Turtwig instead of a Chimchar, then don't use it, Grotle, or Torterra against the Elite Four.TWO THINGS.. the only way to get salamence is to migrate it from Sapphire, ruby or emerald. second thing: ponyta is a good fire Pokemon to get if you evolve it too rapidash. rapidash can be very powerful. so don't dis the dash!

Turtwig is a good starter to go with.Why? Because when it evolves in stage 2, Ground and Grass, It is really strong to infernape, and the other Fire types.And it is strong against grass. I would have Shinx,Starly,Bidoff. They are the only one to catch when you start your adventure.
