Usually, you find the Lost Chaos where you do Mystic Melody or whatever it is (You know, where you play the Flute at the 'old ruins' like sonic says). You play the flute and go on the obstacles and you see a chao!!! But if you get the chao, it does NOT go to your Chao Garden.

Congrats you now have your first chao! In Sonic Adventure 2 simply find a chao box in a stage (its a blue box), open it and grab the key. Then finish the stage you're on and you will warp to the Chao garden. Go inside the garden and follow the same procedure described above.
