When you start tekkit, you're using an application that contains all the data for launching tekkit in itself. In other words, when you download tekkit from the website, you're downloading the "shortcut". Check your Web Browser's downloads folder if you want a copy to put on your desktop.
If you're running firefox, press CTRL+J, then find the tekkit download, right-click, and select "open containing folder". Just copy it onto your desktop and you're good to go.
