Actually depends on the company which makes your r4/i cartridge. The website will both be written on the r4/i or the box in which you receive the r4/i. Go to the website and download the latest firmware in whichever language you want in the download section.

The R4i will work in all DSis with the 1.0-1.3 firmware. It will NOT work it your DSi has been updated to the 1.4 firmware.
