Europe. The word "discotheque" (with minor variations in spelling, but usually pronounced pretty close to disk-o-tek or disk-o-take) is a word in several European languages that basically means "a club where recorded music, as opposed to live music, is played". Using the shortened form "disco" to describe both the clubs and the type of music commonly played there is a fairly obvious step.
