In case you don't want an (*) answer, the word commando is a Boer word from the late 1800's and early 1900's to describe the small units of Boers who used hit-and-run warfare against the British in South Africa.

• The Boers are Dutch born in South Africa. Unlike the Zulus, they fought in small units on horseback, and they gave the British an even greater run for their money in South Africa. For comparison, watch the movies "Zulu" and "Breaker Morant."

• The language of the Boers is Afrikaans, a dialect of Dutch. The South African actress Charlize Theron is a Boer who grew up speaking Afrikaans, and she learned to speak English later.

• Winston Churchill was a veteran of the Boer War, and he was taken prisoner by the Boers, although he later escaped. As Prime Minister of Great Britain in WW2, small units of British soldiers were created to wage unconventional warfare against the Germans, and Churchill named them commandos after his former Boer enemies.
