In the Garden of Eden
BritishNaturism's answer:
The Garden of Eden is a good answer! The better question would be; where did clothesism begin? All we know is that it probably started about 71,000 years ago, based on analysis of the DNA of the clothes louse that, by definition, cannot have existed until the advent of clothes. That means that for the majority of our evolution we did not wear clothes.
For modern Naturism, The earliest known naturist club in the world was formed in 1891 in British India. Founded by Charles Edward Gordon Crawford, a widower, who was a District and Sessions Judge for the Bombay Civil Service at Thana. However, this didn't really get the modern movement going. There is some interest after this, but it is held back by the first world war, only recovering slowly after that war, but managing to establish considerable interest before the start of WWII. This interest was probably greatest in Germany where, despite Nazi opposition, the Freikörperkultur (or FKK) movement became very popular. This has lead to claims that modern Naturism started in Germany in the 1930's, but the real story is more complicated than that.
