What is the goal in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl?

As with most of the Pokemon RPGs, there are a few goals set out in the game which are expected to be achieved. The main goals are as follows:

- Catch and train your Pokemon team for battles,

- Prevent Team Galactic from fulfiling their sinister plans,

- Collect all eight gym badges,

- Defeat the Elite Four and surpass your rival, and

- Complete the Sinnoh Pokedex and then the National Pokedex

Although these are the accepted goals of both Diamond and Pearl, there are a number of small goals related to the larger plot and some personal goals. After you defeat the Elite four, you are free to do mostly whatever you wish in the game. This means there are optional goals of achieving a high score in the Underground, breeding particular Pokemon or even competing in contests.
