Infact there is a big difference! A DS lite has only got three things you can do on it. It can go on the game that you insert in it, it can go on a chat program called picto chat and it can go onto the settings of the system. But the DSI has more features. you can go to the settings, you can go on your game, you can go on the camera where you can take pictures, you can go on sound where you can record a noise for ten seconds and mess around with it, you can go on the internet (if you have wifi) and finally you can go on picto chat.
P.S the DS lite, the DSI and the DSI XL take the same games
