Starters:

All of the starters have different pros, and cons. Cyndaquil turns out to be more offensive, Tododile turns out to be more balanced, and Chikorita turns out to be more defensive.

All Pokemon:

I'd recommend adding a Miltank for recovering Pokemon out of battle and because it's pretty tough, some type of Pokemon that can surf so that you can get through later routes, and some type of Pokemon that can fly so navigating around Johto/Kanto is much easier. Your Pokemon should also have varying types and abilities.

Recommended Team:

This is the team I had when I played, I'm going to leave the move sets and held items to you, because I'm too lazy to write them, and because you'll gain experience from putting it together.
