In the final season we see one of the pharoah's priests, the original owner of the Millenium Ring, Priest Mahad. During this season we see that the monsters are spirits that come from people, these are called Ka, which roughly follows Ancient Egyptian beliefs that a person had several different kinds of soul. Mahad's Ka is the Illusionary Magician.
Mahad sacrificed himself, and fused his life energy (his 'Ba') with his Ka, which created the Dark Magician.
