Ash Ketchum's name in the original Japanese dub was Satoshi, picked up from one of the creators of Pokémon series, Satoshi Tajiri. Ash's name for the English dub of the anime was derived from Satoshi's name, as they share the same letters. We're not sure what Ash's last name is in the Japanese dub, as in that dub nobody has ever really cared, noticed or bought up the topic in the anime or (as far as I know) in real life. But it's possible for it to be safe to assume that his last name might still be Ketchum, or possibly Tajiri? I'm not sure. That's all, and I hope this long explanation didn't bore you too much!
