That will be the approval guage below each character when you look at their character info or inventory screen. It goes from -100 to +100 and the current rating will go up and down depending on the decisions you make, your dialogue choices, and from giving them gifts. When the character has high approval, it can open things like a personal quest or more dialogue options.
