I would say the Bazaar in Olde Town. You can buy anything you can think of, and sell almost anything. If you are looking for a house, I would say looking in the crown shop. It's not obvious, but there is a button that you can click that will allow you to buy things in gold. Not everything is for sale with gold though.

Right click on the furnace to open the smelt menu, place coal at the bottom and the Gold Ore at the top. The ore will gradually smelt into Gold Ingots, remember to keep supplying fuel if you've got a lot to smelt.
