EDIT: a spartan is not a just any person with a gun but on halo Spartans are the guys in armor like masterchief the main players on halo reach are Spartans, all Spartans have a number, if u play halo3 or reach on xbox you will see that you can change your nav point number that is above your head when playing co-op or online that players can see (you cant see your own) for eg. masterchief's spartan number is 117 -hope this answers your question- *edit by pwnd twice*
YET ANOTHER EDIT: There are two SPARTAN projects: SPARTAN II & SPARTAN III
The SPARTAN IIs derived from the ORION supersoldier project. Although spartans usually wear Mjolnir armor, they do not have to. It's like puting on clothes when going out.
