Urban legend has it that he had no middle Ital and when his recording career commenced they thought he needed one then chose 't'. This is however a urban legend.

According to his autobiography "The Storyteller's Nashville", Tom T. Hall's birth name was Thomas Hall without the "T". He added the "T" with the advice from his producer, Jerry Kennedy, at Mercury records just before recording his first album. His producer advised this because he thought his name might be confused with country singer Tompall Glaser. However, on Mr. Hall's first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, he was introduced by Roy Acuff as Tom P. Hay. Roy Acuff inadvertantly confused his name with WSM radio announcer George D. Hay.
