In times well before ours, industries such as timber and mining had remote camps set up. The only means to buy anything was through a company-run store, and these were often notorious for jacking up prices exponentially, to the point where getting the basics you needed cost you more than you earned, so you had to buy on credit.

What debt conditions do these song lyrics refer to Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store?

The song is Sixteen Tons, by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The full refrain is:You load sixteen tons, what do you getAnother day older and deeper in debtSaint Peter don't you call me, 'cause I can't goI owe my soul to the company store. The song refers to coal mining. Coal companies built houses in a "company town" called a "coal patch". Miners paid rent to the coal company. As well, companies set up a Company Store in the Company Town. No other stores existed in that area. The store jacked up prices 3x as high. Miners could buy on credit-- at interest. By the time the month ended, the miner was more in debt than his earnings. So the company let him pay "on credit" but with revolving interest. When it became evident he could never pay, "Coal Police" would come and put the family out on the street.

Do you still have to pay car payment to the car dealership if your car was a write off?

It depends. Normally, if you car was repossessed, the finance company will "write off" the balance, but that does not mean you don't have to pay it. The company normally sells the car at an auction and you owe any deficiency balance. In other words, if you owe $10,000 on the car and it only sells for $6000, you will owe the $4000 difference.

Can the owner legally abandoned the car in the towing company?

If you no longer owe on the car and own it free and clear then it's your choice. You can pick it from the towing company or not. After a period of time, the towing company will place a lien on the vehicle and take ownership. If you still owe money on the car then you have a contractual responsibility to protect the vehicle from liens and you will still be responsible to pay what you owe to the finance company.
