The world's terrain is generated using a random number, this number is called the 'seed'. minecraft allows you to enter your own string of text and numbers to use as the seed, like, you could enter your name and see what the terrain looks like. If your seed makes you spawn near something particularly interesting, you can tell other people what you used, and they'll be able to see that specific terrain too.
