I don't even think there's any real meaning to the name, it's a gaming device, here's what you can do:
Games, streaming Movies from Netflix, etc., shopping for game through ur wii with a credit card or game card, syncing photos to the photo channel, buying channels and games, making miis (ur own personalized characters, u can make lots of them), games on wii dvds will let you get channels of the game to keep you posted (for instance, wii fit channel to tell you how many days it's been since u've been playing the game) and lots of other things! It's awesome, I have one, u can get the new one for 150 bucks.
