This is to show that you've knocked the volcanic ash off of the grass as you walked through it. Each time you change a grassy spot's color to green, and have the soot bag with you, the amount of ash collected inside the bag will increase by 1. Once you have enough of this, head into town and you can have a man in town turn the soot into glass decorations for your secret base, or into flutes to be used outside of battle.
