Go to the flower shop to the right of the Gym to get a watering can. Then go north to the entrance between Goldenrod City and Route 35 and to the guard in there (leave am empty space in your party). He will give you his Spearow which has Mail and ask you to deliver a letter to the lazy man on Route 31. Go up through Route 35, the National Park and Route 36 (there are Trainers on all these Route but you can avoid them easily) until you come to the dancing tree (which is actually a Level 20 Sudowoodo). Water it and it will battle (if you want to catch it bring Great Balls, Pokeballs won't hold him). Go through Violet City onto Route 31 to find the fat man beside an Apricron tree. He'll give you item (sorry, I can't remember the item). Make your way back to the steward to give him back his Spearow and he'll give you something aswell (once again, I forgot, sorry). Then you can go back to where the Sudowoodo was and go north on that junction to Ecruteak City. By the way, Morty, the Ecruteak City Gym Leader, is Ghost-type orientated so Normal type actually come in handy so long as they know non-Normal type moves (especially Dark and Ghost-type moves). I defeated him easily with Level 20 Fearow, Raticate, Noctowl, Stantler, Pigeotto and Togetic. Good luck!
