Spheres are a type of rock, and currency, in the underground system of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. They come in three colors: Red, Green, and Blue being the most common, Pale (light pink) being uncommon, and Prism (light blue/white) being quite rare.
They can be found in the walls of the underground caverns in two general sizes: small and large. The small spheres range in numbered sizes from 1-10, while the larger spheres range in numbered sizes from 11-20. Getting size 10 and size 20 spheres appears to be difficult.
The use of spheres is, as stated, as a currency with the Underground Vendors. There are three types of vendors, Traps vendors (vendors who sell various traps for ranging sizes of spheres), Goods vendors (vendors who sell various goods for ranging sizes of spheres), and Sphere vendors (vendors who use treasures as a currency to trade in for spheres). To get a certain item through these vendors, you must have a sphere of a required color and size. For example, a given Trap vendor at the time I write this answer sells a Hurl Trap -> for a Red Sphere 14. If I wanted to buy this trap, I must trade with him a Red Sphere size 14 or larger.
Eventually, along with lots and lots of digging, your bag will become full, and you can't collect more Spheres! There's no need to worry, though, because of what you can do to solve that problem:
- The easiest thing to do is to trash your spheres, by selecting the desired sphere to trash in the menu, but that's throwing away all your hard work, isn't it?
- You can bury your spheres anywhere in the underground. When searching for bulging walls and traps, these will appear as hidden traps, but will occasionally sparkle through the ground. There are some great aspects to this method:
= You can combine spheres of the same color to create bigger, combined spheres, above a size 20. The maximum size of a sphere possible is 99. Be careful though! There are some glitches that will cut the size of combined spheres. To prevent this, bury your biggest sphere first and your smallest sphere last.
= Your spheres will grow! Is there a good or a trap you really want to buy, but you can't afford? If you're patient enough, you can bury your spheres wherever you'd like, wait a while up overground (they do tend to take a while to grow), and come back down to find a larger sphere!
= Burying spheres actually provokes formations in the surrounding walls. Not just spheres, but treasures, too! Burying spheres near your hideout is a great way to have a lot of goods in an easy-to-reach area.
- You can spend your Spheres for traps, lay them out, and either wait to trick your friends or step on them yourself. Either way, it's relatively fun and a nice way to pass time.
Hopefully this clarified you on what Spheres are in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and how they can be used. Happy digging!
