I suggest the following:

1. Make sure you take every advantage to smash your opponents.

2. If you're doing a slow yet strong attack, don't leave yourself open, especially against bosses.

3. Use your shielding and dodging effectively.

4. Make the right choice of your character (Mario's a good start to practice.)

5. Don't waste time taunting. You get nothing out of it and it leaves you open.

6. Use items for defending yourself. If it's a Smash Ball, beat your opponent to the ground and reach for the Smash Ball.

7. Practice your timing against foes with various moves so you know what to do.

8. If an opponent is evading close to you, do a down smash attack.

9. Study each character: About how they fight, their weight class, their speed, moves, etc.

10. Unlock all characters and stages to get used to all of the stages and characters.

This is pretty much my top ten advice.
