what your implying was not actually the case. the strength of your starter is dependent on your training of it(lv, IV's, Ev's, stats, etc.) if you fought your rival and thought your starter was tougher, that was most likely because of its lvl and stats, but at the same lvl, you would have a huge disadvantage.
