These firefighters are based out of many states in the US. There are many in Oregon and Washington. They need to pass a hard physical fitness test to even start training to fight fires. Then they need to take a class to teach them all the things they will need to know to fight fires. It is a weeks worth of 10 hour classes. If they pass all of the above tests and score well on the other tests then they can be a wildfire fighter. Depending where you live, if there are any volunteer fire departments that you can join, they will give you the basic wildland firefighting classes you need. Which is S-130 (Basic Wildland Firefighting) and S-190 (Basic Weather, Fuel, and Topography). The is the minimum you need to become a wildland firefighter. If you want to work for a State or Federal, there will be a Pack Test. The Pack Test usually means walking three miles while wearing a 45 pound vest. You have 45 minutes to complete the three miles and running is not allowed.

The pack test is a standard test of strength, endurance and aerobic capacity. Wildland firefighters must qualify annually in a fitness test that involves carrying a calibrated backpack a calibrated distance in a limited time. For example, under current US guidelines, a firefighter expected to participate in arduous workload must carry a 45-pound pack 3 miles in under 45 minutes. Moderate or light workload would require a "field test" or "walk test". Smokejumpers, some of the most challenging work in firefighting, are often required to demonstrate they can carry a 110-pound pack 3 miles in 90 minutes, to simulate a "pack out" after an ordinary fire.

It was not long ago when one could qualify with a high school diploma to become a fire fighter. Nowadays, due to the competitive nature of the job, most fire departments require at least two years of college credits. Even before you consider applying for fire fighter training, you should meet the following minimum requirements: 1. Be at least 18 years old. Many fire departments would prefer you to be 21 years, 2. Be physically fit, 3. Have a clean criminal record, 4. Have a high school diploma. Though more fire departments now require a college education or specialized training After the initial application, you are invited for more tests. In order to qualify to enter a fire-fighting program, you will be required to test at least three exams: An aptitude test, a written test and a physical ability test. Different fire departments will have different written tests. Their goal however, is the same. As a fire fighter, you will be required to be observant and have a good memory. They test your ability to read comprehension, spatial awareness, mechanical reason, logic, memory and observation. Part of your duties as a fire fighter include, being placed in dangerous situations. You do not want a fire fighter who is agitated and cannot handle pressure. Psychological tests ensure that you are mentally fit to perform your job. Physical tests are probably the most important of the three processes. Fire fighting is a physically demanding occupation. It is important for the fire fighting training candidate to be healthy and strong. The physical tests will vary from one academy to another. However, do not be surprised if you are asked to: 1. Carry equipment – you may be asked to drag a hose reel for 25 meters, then jog back 25 meters, 2. Assemble Equipment – To test your dexterity, you may be asked to assemble and disassemble an item using a color coded diagram, 3. Clear an enclosed space, 4. Ladder lift, etc Fire fighting departments pride themselves as being the best. They place great emphasis on the quality of candidates they accept in their fire fighter training programs. However, with a little preparation, you too can qualify.
