From 1989 to 1996, SEGA and Nintendo were at each others throats. After SEGA left the hardware business in 1999-2000 holiday season, Nintendo agreed to let them help the design games. They recently released a couple games for the PC.

Sonic and Mario's parent companies (SEGA and Nintendo, respectively) has a heated rivalry in the 1990's. It was assumed the two mascots were rivals as well. Nowadays SEGA and Nintendo have a much more friendly relationship however, and Sonic and Mario have even appeared in games together.

In the begining when Sonic did not exist, Mario games and Nintendo dominated the gaming world. SEGA decided the needed a mascot too. Then Sonic the Hedgehog was born. Sonic and Mario games fought furiously until SEGA over came Nintendo. Now they both are at level. They now work together to make the legendary Mario And Sonic games. The rivalry is just a remembarance and a appreciation of those days. Sega never overcame Nintendo; Sega just gave up and stopped making video game hardware.
