ACTUALLY sex does not determine battle effectiveness, males and females are almost exactly the same like every other gen since in began. Sex determine reproduction (female determines resulting Pokemon and male determines it's move-set). Since you talking about a starter, the only real advantage is that you can reproduce that Pokemon IF you can get one.
