Gengar is an amazing Pokemon, it has great special attack (base 130) and it is really quick so it fits in nicely as a special sweeper. Defensively it isn't so good, but Gengar shouldn't be used as a defensive Pokemon anyway (although with it's ability Levitiate it is immune to 3 types; Fighting, Normal and Ground). Offensively it can take out many Pokemon in one hit. It learns good moves like Shadow Ball, Dream Eater, Confuse Ray, Hypnosis and Dark Pulse by levelling up. It can also learn moves like Thunderbolt and Psychic by TM. I would recommend teaching your Gengar Dark Pulse so it can defend itself against Psychic and Ghost Types (it's two main weaknesses) In my opinion one of the best Pokemon in the game.
