Vergil dies at the end of DMC3 when he goes to fight Mundus (the demon that Sparda could not defeat) and Mundus defeats him, but he is not fully dead if you remember Nelo Angelo in DMC1 that is Vergil's soul taken over by Mundus and he is completely evil and under the control of Mundus and Nelo fights Dante three times and after the third time Dante kills Nelo (Vergil) permanently. Its funny the only one who can truly take down a son a Sparda is a son of Sparda.

How do you unlock sparda devil triger in Devil May Cry?
This answer is for devil may cry 3. First you have to beat dante's story on normal mode.(to unlock normal mode beat easy.or Just start the game on normal.) The new clothes you will get should be dante with sparda's sword over his back. Then do any mission with rebeillion weapon in your weapon set, then switch to rebellion then do devil trigger. Instead of changing into dante's demon you will turn into sparda. Hope this helped.

vergil is STRONGER than dante during the begginings of devil ma cry there are cutscenes were he CAN outright kill dante like for example the first fight with nelo angelo. however like stated by himself he loves his brother infact he saves dante on the fight against arkham on mission 19. jester on mission 13 summarizes what vergil and dante are, jester was more and inbetween problem he couldnt control the sword of sparda thats where arkham failed. althought dante is the only character known to achieve the transformation of sparda when wielding force edge.
