The number of waves depends on what gametype one plays. If it is regular firefight that you can find in the main menu, the number of waves is unlimited and don't end until you lose all of your lives. If it is Score Attack, you are aiming to win a round of firefight, which is 5 waves of enemies. The other gametypes in matchmaking have around a 2-3 Round limit, where a bonus round starts, where dropships spawn an unlimited amount of grunts for a time limit.
