By the sum rule we can count the number of strings of length 4 or less by counting the number of strings of length i, for 0 <= i <= 4, and then adding the results. Now there are 26 letters to choose from, and a string of length i is specified by choosing its characters, one after another. Therefore, by the product rule there are 26^i strings of length i.
The answer to the question is thus:
sum i=0 to 4 ( 26^i = 1 + 26 + 676 + 17576 + 456976) = 475,255.

You don't it works when they are capitals
k is the lower case and K is the upper case. Why do we say so? In olden days, in the printing press, the letters, carved at the tip of lead cuboid, were placed in wooden arrays. Small letters usually were placed in the lower case and the capital letters were in the upper case. Hence the name. In SI system k, stands for kilo and K stands for Kelvin, the unit of temperature. K in chemistry stands for the element, Potassium.
Your doing that test too I take it?? I put 1, since S was the only one I could see without a line of symmetry. Correct me if im wrong. Well it would depend on if they are upper case or lower case letters. Look at the lower case {m a t h e}. The upper case versions of these do have a line of symmetry, but not the lower case. (Well perhaps t, depending on the font used)
CASE may work for you.
