No, while an ethernet cable plug looks like a phone jack cable plug it is actually larger. The PS3 can not be connected to the internet with dial up internet service and an ethernet cable is meant to be connected to a modem or router.
You plug an ethernet cable into the back of the PS3 into what looks like a large phone jack
You purchase a router in ether wireless or wired for your PS3 or you can connect wired with an ethernet cable directly between Cable or DSL modem and the back of your PS3. Routers allow you to split your internet connection and provide a connection to multiple devices like to your PC, PS3, Smart TV, and a laptop. Routers can be wired with output ports for ethernet cables or wireless for WiFi connections and those normally include outputs for wired connections. They are installed by plugging a ethernet cable from it's input into your modem's output.
You need cable or DSL internet and a router connected to your modem if you also have a PC and then just connect an ethernet cable from you router to the PS2 ethernet port that looks sort of like a large phone plug
Yes you have to pay if you are going to have someone do it. I really don't know your facts and whether you already have broadband cable or DSL or are paying for them to come out and make a connection. If you do it yourself the ethernet cable will run under $15 for an Ebay But it now on a 50 foot Belkin gold Cat 6 ethernet cable if you need one that long. You will also need to purchase a router to have another spot to plug it into if you don't already have a router and something like a PC is already connected to the modem as it was when I did mine.
The ethernet cable needs to be connected to a router or modem and it works fine although I chose to purchase the CAT 6 ethernet cable. The speed test for the internet connection is faster with the ethernet connection than with the WiFi connection and I have never lost a connection like I did with WiFi
A cell Phone can not use the PS3 Bluetooth system for your online connection on the PS3. The PS3 systems design will only allow the internet connection to be ethernet cable or WiFi and not the the USB port connections
The ethernet helps you surf the internet faster

You need internet service to go online. You must either have wireless or ethernet wired hookup to the internet. I used a wireless router connected with ethernet cable to my cable modem. When I didn't like losing the connection I then also used a 50 foot Cat 6 Ethernet cable from one of the 4 wired spots on the back of the CISCO LINKSYS WRT 160N wireless router to my PS3. I noticed improvements in the connection speeds with the PS3 tests using a wired connection and recommend using a wired connection.
If the wireless router is like mine then you also can make an ethernet connection with the PS3 using an ethernet cable
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus... If you meant to ask if you can use your USB port to somehow connect to the internet, then yes. You can get a USB wireless (Wifi) adapter if you have a wireless network (or wireless router, connect to a high-speed internet connection like Cable, DSL, etc...) If you do not have, or don't want a wireless network but would still like to connect to the internet through Ethernet, but don't have an Ethernet network card on your computer, you can use a USB Ethernet adapter.

internet. its that plug like the phone line really if you look at the tip of it

The ethernet cord may look like a phone cord , but it is a cable that will connect the PS3 to your internet service provider (ISP) modem or to th router that most people have to purchase just like you must purchase your internet service before you can connect to the internet If you have internet service in your home you can purchase a router so that the internet going to the computer can be split. It goes between the modem and the computer and has other ethernet plugs on it' back. You run a ethernet cable from the back of a PS3 to the back of the router SEE RELATED LINK
Internet like Wifi is wireless, unlike cable which is usually a modem hooked up and it flows through the cable connection.
