Goku, in a last-ditch attempt to beat Cell, uses Instant Transmission to take him far away from Earth, so as not to destroy the planet when he unleashes a powerful self-destruction. Destroying King Kai's planet in the process, the blast kills Goku (as well as King Kai, Bubbles, and Jeffrey). When Cell, using his ability to heal to full power if even one tiny part of him survives, returns to Earth to disrupt the Z warriors' celebrations, and to have his revenge on the people that almost destroyed him. The combination of Android sixteen's sacrifice, his father's seemingly pointless last resort, and the sight of his friends being bested by Cell's six bite-size minions, pushes Gohan over the edge, and his rage finally unlocks the hidden power that had until that point been alluded to countless times and never shown. Gohan is the first of the warriors to unlock the Super Sayian 2 form, and uses it to smash the Mini-Cells and do a massive deal of damage to Cell himself. Though he breaks a leg and an arm in the process, Gohan unleashes a massive Kamehameha wave at Cell, and becomes locked in a struggle for control of the beam. Goku, from the afterlife, contacts Gohan through King Kai's antennae, and lends him the additional ki (or chi or qi) energy needed to destroy every last molecule of the being known as Cell.
