The main way to earn friendship is to talk to the person and give them a gift once per day.
The more they like the gift, the faster you'll earn hearts. You can tell how much someone likes it by how they react when you give it to them. If muscial notes pop up it is just an okay gift. Not very effective, but better then nothing. If a heart pops up they like the gift. If one big heart and a few little ones pops up then it is a favorite gift of theirs. And the most effective for earning friendship.
Each character has different likes and dislikes. You will lose friendship with a character if you use a tool on them or give them a gift they hate.
Another way to gain friendship is to "rub" characters. If you have a second Wiimote, point it at the screen. Move the cursor over the character and "rub" them. You can do it daily and it will gain friendship with that character.
