When you play in a non campaign game after you have earned enough points and assuming you are the highest on the leader board on your team (which if you're just playing just against the computer is pretty much guaranteed) you will be given the option to play as a hero character; which one you get depend on your faction and which map you are playing on. Some campaign missions let you play as a hero when you have completed certain objectives. The above information assumes you are playing with the default options for hero's.
