use the iem finder to lead you in the direction of the buried item. Once you get pretty close to being right by it press A. If you don't pick up the item then you an't in the right place, just walk around and press A. Eventually you will pick it up. If this don't work get a Pokemon with the ablity to pick up buried items. (example of Pokemon with this ablity- Poochyena.)

Like all items, the scanner will look like a Pokeball when you pick it up.

You cannot go underwater in HeartGold. You could go underwater in Sapphire, Emerald, and Ruby, but not in HeartGold. Items are not underwater in HeartGold, either.
To get Swampit you just have to pick mudkip as your first pokemon

trainers don't hold them get a Pokemon that has the ability pick up like meowth or zigagooon
put sapphire in the GBA slot of your ds then go to heart gold menu and select migrate from sapphire and pick the Pokemon you want to send then go to the pokepal park and do a catching show (it's in Kanto in Fuhsia city)
Both are the same just each catch different Pokemon like the legendary Pokemon Groudon for Ruby and Kyogre for Sapphire if i had to pick one i would pick sapphire since i have it. ^Yeah both are exactly the same :) Storyline and all :) Just the Pokemon are different. Emerald is completely different from those two though....apart from the map.
