The Wooden Button wasn't created until minecraft 1.4.2, but the stone was made in Alpha 1.0.1. You use a Stone block on the crafting table or even in your inventory on your quick-craft area and that's it. This creates the Stone Button. If you want to make the Wooden Button, use any kind of Wooden Planks and place one on any slot in the crafting area.
