I believe you have to connect it under device settings under the settings menu. As headsets are connected this way, if its wireless or not. If its wired, the USB port will generally pickup the device and automatically bring up the register device menu. Please note: YOU WILL NEED AN ORIGINAL PS3 CONTROLLER TO DO THIS PROCESS

On a wired controller everything is transferred threw the usb wire. This why you must always make sure that there is not any damage to the cord or else the controls might not work or seem "sluggish". On a wired controller all the power is threw the cord, which again can be disrupted by any damage to the cord itself.
download xpadder on xpadder.com, connect your WIRED controller in to your PC and set all the settings to what you like and assign buttons to the keyboard
If you are using a wired controller you just plug it in. If you are using a wireless you turn on the controller then click the little button on the very top above the battery pack and the click the little button on the console beside the power button. It should pause the game and make all the circles go around the menu button. This is if your connecting a controller that's never been connected to that console. If the controller has been connected to that console before just hold the center button on the controller. In some games you will have to be in the menu's in order to connect extra controllers.
The wired headset isn't charged like the wireless. Instead it gets power directly from the controller it is plugged into. When unplugged it doesn't hold a charge.
There is a chat pad that can connect to the microphone port on the controller or you can just use a usb keyboard (doesnt matter if its wired or wireless)
