The default movement when pushing the analog stick on the Playstation 2's Dual Shock controller is running. In order to allow Fayt to walk over the ice, so that he doesn't slip, you have to hold down Circle while walking slowly with the analog stick.
This can also be accomplished by tapping the analog stick very gently, but it still may cause the ice to crack and break if you accidentally push it even a little too hard, so it's recommended to use the Circle method to walk instead.
