First you must beat the 4th gym. This gym leader is Flannery and she is the fire type trainer. Then after you come out of the gym you rival will come out of a house and come and talk to you. He/She will give you the go-go goggles, which, allows you to enter the desert.
Extra tip: Call you rival before you get in sight range of the desert and they will say something about a mirage tower. You should see it. You need a mach bike to get the claw fossil or root fossil at the top.
You can't get both so pick wisley.
