You can get all starters with just the Generation IV Games. You will need:

• two DS consoles (for trading)
• One copy of either Pearl/Diamond/Platinum
• One copy of either Heart Gold/Soul Silver
• You can optionally have another copy of any Gen IV Pokémon Game to store your pokémon (especially if you are using the first technique mentioned here).

Johto and Sinnoh Starter PokémonFor the 'native' starter Pokemon, you can start over, catch a second Pokemon, then trade your starter, and repeat until you have all three. Note you will have to delete your save game to do this. Kanto and Hoenn Starter PokémonIn HG/SS, Professor Oak offers you a Kanto starter in Pallet Town, and Steven Stone offers you a Hoenn starter in Saffron City, but only after getting all 16 badges and defeating Red. The best way to get the starter pokémon you didn't pick would be to have friends give you theirs.

You can get multiple versions of your own starter if you breed a female starter Pokemon with a Ditto at the Day Care. You can ensure it is female by saving before you enter Professor Oak's Lab, then check if it is female. If it's not, then reload the save game.

Cheating using Action Replay

You can alternatively use a cheating device such as Action Replay DS, and the 'Wild Pokemon Modifier' code.

Press L+R to get 493 Master Balls and 100 Ultra Balls. Make the number of Master Balls equal to the National Dex ID of the Pokemon, and Ultra Balls to the level. Hold L, then find a Wild Pokémon.
