If these don't work, check for any items of furniture, or other sims in the way, especially in the Sims 3 if you have placed or rotated objects off-grid. If none of these work and you have saved recently, just quit and reload the saved game. In the Sims 2, using the cheat (ctrl+c) moveobjects on and then moving the sim in buy mode may help.
