How do you fix a authentication error 34 on PS3 online?

i had this problem when i first joined ps3 online i tried to play online but every time it came up with this message about a authentication error 34

i went on a ps3 forum and one guy sugested deleting the saved data on the game and then try and go online and it worked , but if you are slightly worried about losing game data for nothing try it with a lesser liked game with online features to start with
