First, some enemies cant be backstabbed, commonly large enemies now...

To backstab you need to go directly behind the enemy, and Siren Creed said u cant backstab with axe which is wrong, u can backstab with all weapons but is not necessarily a STAB, so go behind the enemy and R1 without your shield raised
