Maria died whilst escaping the Ark raid 50 years ago, she was shot by a G.U.N soldier and she used her last bit of strength to get Shadow safely to Earth, though Shadow doesnt like the government he joined when invited by the Commander, possibly to keep his promise to Maria to always protect the planet.
