A WEP key has nothing to do with your DS system but the WEP key is the password that is needed for secured wireless modem networks when you're trying to set up the connection with other devices. Most default WEP keys can be on the router or the modem already but if the key isn't a default one then you'll have to ask whoever set up your modem or Router for the WEP key.
It has a settings option where you can search for a access point and connect to it. But if it is locked,you need to have a security key. Just make sure there is wifi at your home and that you can connect to.

if you mean for a wifi signal that's someone wifi and he doesn't one anyone to connect to it except for him, the only way you can get the wep key is to ask for the guy that own the wifi signal.
Of course it works because it is wifi compatible.all you need to do is to enter the wifi key which is located on the back of the device (you need to remove the battery cover though)locate the wifi network on the ps3 connect to it,enter the wifi key and dont forget to do the activation on the gateway of the device (192.168.1.1)

As is stated in the manual, the 'advanced' connections that the XL uses to connect to WPA wifi, can only be used with the XL's browser and Nintendo store functions. It cannot use the WPA connection when playing a game.
