Do you have to beat the eighth gym leader on Pokemon platinum to get Giratina?

You do not need to complete the 8th gym to get to Giratina. You can't even get there before beating or catching Giratina. You will need to have completed the Pastoria and Snowpoint city gym because you need the HM moves Surf and Rock Climb. Go to Oreburgh City and you arrive at the PC. Go north until you see the path you need the bicycle to get up. Then head east until you enter Mt. Coronet. As soon as you enter Mt. Coronet, there is some water. Use Surf to get across that. Go as far across as you can, then, go down until you get to that wall you jump over. Then go across to the rocky wall. Use Rock Climb. Then you have to get to the very top of Mt. Coronet, the spear pillar. Then you and your friend you named at the start of the game will have to battle two Team Galactic commanders. Once you do that, your friend will heal your Pokemon. The Team Galactic boss then says lots of random stuff and a Pokemon appears from nowhere. Then the Pokemon, which comes out as giratina. takes Cyrus away. Cynthia comes and tells you to enter the vortex which leads you into the Distortion World. Lots of You Tube videos can guide you through the Distortion World. When you get through that you have to battle the Team Galactic leader. Once defeating him, Cynthia will heal your Pokemon to go on and face GIRATINA!
You can get dialga and palkia through the distotortion world as well.
